Recognised Centres for UKCC

Becoming a Recognised Centre to offer UKCC qualifications

As most of you would now have been alerted to, England Basketball is moving our Level 1, 2 and 3 Coaching Awards over to the UK Coaching Certificate. Level 1 has successfully moved over and numerous courses have already been offered, Level 2 has been accepted by 1st4sport and can begin being offered at the start of November, and we hope that Level 3 will be ready early in the New Year.

The most challenging aspect of the new system is the requirement that for anyone to offer a UKCC qualification, they must be a Recognised Centre (and have Qualification Approval to offer basketball). While the paperwork and administration that is required to become a RC appears difficult, it is in fact a relatively simple process.

England Basketball is keen to encourage organisations large and small (from education institutions and CSP’s through to clubs) to work towards becoming a Recognised Centre with Qualification Approval for Basketball. England Basketball are available to assist with the process, as are 1st4sport. In fact, 1st4sport can help with the most time consuming aspect – drawing up the policies and procedures that a Recognised Centre is required to have (for example internal verification documents, appeals and complaints procedures, data protection statement). 1st4sport can send you sample forms for all the documents required, making the process much easier.

To receive the information and forms on becoming a Recognised Centre, go to:

http://www.1st4sportqualifications.com

As mentioned above, there is a second application that has to be made (at the same time as the RC application), and this is for Qualification Approval. On the form above there is a section to list the qualifications you are interested in. Obviously list basketball and they will send this information, hopefully at the same time. Once you have these forms have a read through and either contact 1st4sport direct, or myself for assistance (especially for the sample forms previously mentioned). For the Qualification Approval, there are some people for roles that need listing that you will probably need to contact me for (tutors, etc).

There is another option if becoming a Recognised Centre is not possible – partner with an organisation in your area that already has Recognised Centre status. There may be a RC that already has Qualification Approval for Basketball, but more likely if the RC’s near to you do not have QA for Basketball you can partner with them to add basketball to their list of qualifications on offer. Keep in mind our current incentive of £500 for UKCC Level 1’s (see below for more information). This incentive should make working with you an attractive option for any Recognised Centre.

A common misconception is that a Recognised Centre needs its own basketball facility to be recognised. Having a suitable facility to hold a course, just as for the old EB Level 1, is required but it need not be in control of the RC; it could be one hired or perhaps used as part of an agreement between the RC and the facility management.

Here is a reminder of the UKCC Level 1 Incentive Scheme:

Every UKCC Level 1 course that is run can collect a £500 incentive. This significant amount covers the increased cost of the course resource, which means the participant fee should not need to increase markedly.

To receive the incentive, any organisation simply informs England Basketball they are running a UKCC Level 1 (via Chris Brown or myself), providing all the basic course information of dates, times, location and tutor. Once the final session of the course is presented, there are two simple forms to send EB, and after these are received, we will forward the £500.

For more information on the incentive, or on the UKCC course in general, feel free to contact Ben Rush Ben.Rush@englandbasketball.co.uk or 0114 223 5636
