Paralympic Handover 17 9 08

An estimated 5,000 schools and colleges across the UK took up London 2012’s invitation to lead the celebrations and welcome the Paralympic Games home, on the day London Mayor Boris Johnson received the Paralympic Flag during the Closing Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

In the South West alone, 273 schools and colleges officially registered to be part of the Paralympic Handover with many more also taking part in activities.

Sport England statement on 2102 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Sport England believes that hosting the Games in 2012 represents an unparalleled opportunity for sport at all levels and therefore welcomes the Committee's focus on ways to maximise the legacy of the Games for community sport. Sport England has backed the Games since the bid phase and believes that for the pride of the nation we have got to produce the greatest Games there has ever been.

London 2012 babies celebrate second birthday with Seb, Sally and Bob the Builder

Wednesday 20 December was a special day for Connor. He is one of the lucky babies who will be taking part at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Connor Colbourne Brown, from Bristol, was born on 20th December 2004 – 20/12 day (20th day, 12th month). London 2012 promised children who were born on this day and registered with the London bid, a role in the official celebrations.

Signs of Positive Engagement

There have been a number of positive indications concerning the engagement of all sections of the community across the South West with regard to the Olympic agenda.

Guy Lavender, South West England Director for the 2012 Games, commented: "This reflects very positively on the engagement of key partners across the region and is certainly a very encouraging sign that we can build on this enthusiasm for next year as we develop our legacy plans."

Pre Games Training Camp Applications Reminder

London 2012 is urgently reminding UK sporting facilities and venues that there are less than 7 weeks to go before the deadline (31 Jan 2007) to be considered for inclusion in the Pre Games Training Camp Guide for the London 2012 Games.

London 2012 will showcase the best sporting facilities in the UK to all Olympic and Paralympic Teams in a guide to be published in Beijing in 2008.
